2007 Chesapeake Watershed Forum - Sharing Strategies to Manage Growth and Protect Our Waters
October 12-14 Shepherdstown, WV

This conference, attended by over 300 people representing over 3,000 miles of Chesapeake Bay watersheds and the organizations that support them, was in and of itself a watershed of information! The conference was sponsored by Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Chesapeake Bay Program, Chesapeake Bay Trust, Chesapeake Bay Funders Network and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Hosted at the National Conservation Training Center, an awesome facility and setting, it was the perfect atmosphere for an inspiring weekend!

Did you know that:
The Chesapeake Bay has more shoreline then the entire coast of California?
The Bay, although most intimately Maryland’s is affected by watersheds as far away as New York?
Agriculture is responsible for 42% of the nitrogen, 45% of phosphorus and 61% of sediment pollutants impacting the Bay?

Clearly, the mission of LESSON, developing a safe, just and sustainable food system for the region, and the watershed organizations commitments to responsible environmental stewardship and a healthy watershed are intricately connected. Watershed organizations are true partners of LESSON and we were very welcomed attendants of the Forum. We were also the only organization there specifically representing sustainable farming and foodsheds.

The Forum offered 6 tracks, three aimed at watershed project development and three geared to organizational development. Taking advantage of the organizational sessions I was able to gather information that will benefit LESSON by focusing on:
Effectiveness of the Board
Sustainability
Fundraising
Knowledge of granting opportunities
Potential partners
Networking and getting more exposure to LESSON
Opportunities to socialize, learn about what others are doing, brain-storming and just knowing that LESSON is making real the vision of a healthier Bay thus a healthier planet through sustainable farming and care for our local foodsheds was incredibly inspiring!

The lessons learned will be LESSON applied. Looking forward to our growth this year and return next year!

Respectfully submitted,
Jane Hager
LESSON Board Member
